Guide Review - Review of Creepers by Joanne Dahme
If it wasn't for the tween population would Harry Potter have become a household name? What about R.L Stine (the author of the Goosebumps series) or Shannon Hale, for that matter? Probably not.
Tweens may not be the eager readers they once were, but a good story will still grab a tween's attention. If your tween is especially interested in mysteries or ghost stories, Creepers is a must read.
Written by first time author, Joanne Dahme, Creepers is the story of a tween girl named Courtney who stumbles into a mystery and a ghost story the minute she and her parents move into an old home in New England. The first thing Courtney notices about her home is the abundance of ivy growing everywhere. As Courtney befriends a young girl named Margaret, and her odd father, Christian Geyer, she realizes the duo are a part of the mystery she stumbled upon and that they require her help to solve an ancient family curse that continues to haunt the Geyer family to present day.
Witches, ghosts, creeping ivy, and a colony of mysterious cats add even more suspense to the story. Throughout the book Courtney faces her mystery with courage and curiosity, using good judgment and seeking her parents for advice and assistance.
Creepers raises many sophisticated questions to the reader including life after death, spirituality, the possibility of extra sensory perception (ESP), and other phenomena. Younger tweens might find the story a bit scary. Older tweens will likely embrace the questions presented, and appreciate the driving message of the story, which is the love a parent has for a child might overcome any obstacle, including death.
Creepers would be a great selection for a tween book club, or even for a parent/tween book club.
