Question: What are the signs of bullying in tweens?
Answer: When tweens or preteens are up against the neighborhood or school yard bully, they may or may not show signs of bullying. If your child manages to deal with the bully herself, the incidents could take place and end without your ever knowing about them. But if your tween frequently goes up against a bully, or can't manage the problems alone, she may show signs of bullying.

Signs of Bullying

  • Withdrawing from her favorite activities
  • Declining interest in school or after school activities
  • Withdrawing from her friends or social circle
  • Wanting to run away
  • Anger (may or may not be directed at you)
  • Volatile emotions
  • Consistently missing the bus
  • Torn clothes, backpack, or other personal items
  • Missing school items, such as books, homework, lunch box, or band instrument
  • Wanting to take protection to school such as a knife or a gun
  • Bruises and/or scrapes
  • Loss of or increase in appetite

If your child is being bullied, it may be time for you to take action to help. Knowing what to do if your child is being bullied may prevent future incidents and help your tween learn to manage difficult people.
