Bad behavior. It's rampant in middle school. Bullies, mean girls, drama, gossip -- it's all a part of the middle school years. But that doesn't mean your child has to be a victim. In fact, there are certain steps you can take now to help your child minimize these ugly encounters, or deal with them swiftly should they crop up.
Encourage your child to surround herself with friends who offer support and encouragement. At the same time teach her how to spot girls or boys that thrive on negative emotions and behaviors.
Gentle reminders on how to be a good friend to others is probably also a good idea.
You make it sound so easy! Easier said than done, I say, because all of the sudden the mean girl sending inappropriate texts is her friend since preschool. And she’s getting harassed in class because she’s smarter than all of the boys. It is very hard and don’t think it’s as easy as surrounding herself with supportive friends….some of them will surprise you and throw her offer for a glance and hair swish from the popular girl of the hour. I would advise this: make sure she knows these things will happen. That middle school stinks and all she can do is constantly be on the lookout for new friends who don’t fall for the drama. To be develop a thick skin for hurtful words and actions and draw the line at physical bullying. Oh, and figure out how you’ll handle things if it’s your child who’s the mean girl or bully! Will you take that phone call from a distraught parent and deny that you child could ever do something so awful or listen and apologize and deal with the truth? Middle school stinks and there are no easy answers. Be prepared for a bumpy ride.
Well said! My daughter has been dealing with a mean girl for years and they play on the same middle school sports team. Actually the girl is a frinenmy hot and cold! It is not easy just have to continue to give the tools to help them through>
