The lunch period during the middle school years is more important than many parents think. For starters, it's the social scene of the day -- and where your child sits determines much of his or her social circle. And while socializing is a big part of the lunch period, as a parent you want your child to actually eat something nutritious -- something that will get her through the rest of the day.
That might not be so easy. While cafeteria food has improved over the years at many schools, it would be an overstatement to say it's actually healthy. And bringing lunch can also be difficult in middle school. You may find that your child's taste buds have changed and that he now refuses to bring a lunch box or tote.
Middle schoolers can make anything difficult. Work with your tween to find foods that can be packed easily and that will keep until the lunch period. Consider easy to eat foods like apples, dips and healthy wraps. Girls may be a tad easier to please during this phase of development. They may approve yogurt, fruit salad or even a homemade Cobb salad.
